A sketch is a short and funny situation acted out in a few minutes. A sketch usually lasts between 30 seconds and 10 minutes. So how do you write a sketch? Here are some useful tips that will improve your sketch-writing skills:
- First, decide what is funny and what isn’t. Most things can be funny if they are put in the right way. Embarrassing situations are often funny. Real-life situations that we can relate to can also be very funny. Even sensitive issues, such as death and sickness, can be funny, but then it is extremely important that it is put in the right way. Sensitive issues put in a bad way are just tasteless.
- Think about your audience. Eighty-year-old women will probably not be able to relate to issues related to social networking sites or the latest computer game. We can only understand the point if we have the correct background knowledge.
- Try to think of the sketch as a situation in three stages: First joke – haha, second joke – hahaha, final joke – hahahahahaha.
- Keep a high pace – there is not much room for pausing in a sketch, unless it is important to the plot. If the audience get too much time to think, you might lose them. Make them start laughing and then keep them laughing.
- Don’t make the point/punch line too far-fetched. It must be obvious enough for most people to understand. Waiting for a point and not understanding it is very frustrating.
- Make the ending short, fast and hard. Let the final joke be the end.
- It is a good idea to watch some sketches and analyse what it is that makes them good or not so good. Make notes of good ideas and be influenced.
